Biomineral Silica Aerogel – Reinventing Silica Aerogel

Biomineral silica aerogel as next-generation silica aerogel material for space savings and energy efficiency combined with fire resistance and easy, dust-free handling

Our biomineral silica aerogels are unique hybrid materials derived from non-food biomass and silica.

Thanks to our energy-efficient production technology and green raw material base, we anticipate an excellent sustainability footprint footprint.

With our biomineral silica aerogels, we are setting new standards in sustainable material technology, offering solutions for numerous industrial applications.

Biomineral Silica Aerogel LSMA

Biomineral Silica Aerogel LSMA is a next-generation silica aerogel based on silicate combined with biopolymers in an innovative hybrid formulation.

There are several advantages:

✅ The typical dust release of silica aerogels is strongly reduced.

✅ It is possible to create 3D composites out of the material enabling completely new product options.

✅ The intrinsic properties of silica such as fire and temperature resistance are retained. We are also working on high-temperature grades.

✅ We estimate the GWP to be significantly lower than current silica aerogel materials.

✅ Thanks to our next-generation product and process technology, the material will be available at attractive prices.

Biomineral Silica Aerogel LSMA is the perfect solution for demanding insulation and high-temperature applications, offering a unique combination of sustainability, performance, and adaptability.

The material is available as hydrophilic or hydrophobic grades.

A first application test with the material was conducted in the CUBE, the worldwide first carbon fiber-reinforced concrete building, in 2022. More information on the CUBE is available here.

In 2025, we reported first larger-scale pilot production of the material. This was an important milestone validating our next-generation process technology.

In 2026, the material has undergone successful pilot testing in aerogel insulation render as part of the EasiZero project.

Biomineral Silica Aerogel LSMA is currently in development. Sample quantities are available at the pilot scale.

Thermal conductivity particle bed: 0.019 W/(m*K) (at 10°C)

Thermal conductivity particle bed with optimized particle size distribution: 0.016-0.017 W/(m*K) (at 10°C)

Internal surface area: 250-350 m²/g

Pore volume (< 100 nm): 3.0 cm³/g

Porosity: >90%

Hydrophilic or hydrophobic grades
